Is it your fault if you’re fat?

Recently I have been getting some flak from people about my ranting. Maybe not the type of feedback you might be expecting however.

I backed off a little in the last while in order to focus on sending out a little extra information, you know the kind, impartial, informative stuff. But I miss it.

And apparently so do some of you. So here we go, let’s talk about what’s on my mind recently and I will leave the unbiased information provisions to Whitney and the rest of our team.

This is one of my favourite topics. You will see it in the media quite a bit. Basically, if you’re fat then it’s your fault. I couldn’t agree more.

First, what do I mean by fat? Over fat. It means you have an unhealthy body fat percentage. Generally over 24% for women and over 20% for men. When your body fat creeps up over these levels you are at greater risk for diabetes, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Not to mention the psychological impact from being over fat in a society that constantly bombards us with the message that over fat is bad and we should be striving for an often unhealthy body fat percentage that we call a six pack.

I work in the fitness industry and am around people working out every single day. I read innumerable blogs, magazines, websites, twitter feeds, books, and almost any other form of media out there. And I keep hearing the same thing all the time.

“I can’t lose weight because my boyfriend/girlfriend/parents/wife/husband/roommate/dog keeps bringing chocolate/candy/chips/ice cream/cookies into the house.”

“It’s just so hard because I am so busy all I have time for is fast food.”

“I have to have quick, packaged food around because my kids need it.”

“Well, you still have to live your life, you can’t say no to everything forever.”

“It was a birthday lunch, so I had to have a piece of cake.”

“We were out for dinner and it would be rude not to have a drink.”

Here is the truth: it is all a pile of bullshit.

It doesn’t matter what others bring in around you. You CHOOSE to eat it. You pick it up. You put it in your mouth. These are all conscious decisions you have to make. It’s not like your heart beat which is going to (hopefully) go on beating no matter what happens.

If you have excess body fat it is because you eat too much and exercise too little. Period. It is your fault. It is up to you. YOU decide what is going into your mouth.

Stop spewing out this constant babble of crap to make yourself feel better because you do not have the willpower to control what you put in your mouth.

Now, really, I don’t care all that much what you decide to do. If you’re ready to take care of yourself and change your life, to be successful with your fitness, then I am here to help, advise, and guide you.

But if you are choosing to put crap in your mouth and skip out on workouts then don’t come bitching to me when you are not happy with your progress. It’s your life. You decide.
